Our core competences in the insurance of the person forms the basis for our commitment outside Germany. We use our experience of over a 100 years in providing health care insurance coverage and services tailored to meet market needs so as to be in a position to offer solutions to the various different health care systems.
Our foreign strategy is directed towards the countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). These markets have been characterised for several years by high growth rates and therefore promising market opportunities.
We started our activities abroad in 1993 in Hungary by selling life and property insurance. We then opened up the market in Poland in the year 2001, initially with life and property insurance too. We are now growing with travel and health care insurance dynamically too. We started up business in Romania in the year 2008, focussing on health care insurance for our target group of growing small to medium-sized businesses. Furthermore, we have been running our reinsurance business in Switzerland since 2004 as an independent business area. Based on our core competence in private health care, our strategy in Central and Eastern Europe is:
- to position ourselves as an insurance company as market leader for integrated health care insurance and
- to assert ourselves in attractive niches depending on the regional distinctions of the countries in each case.
The growing prosperity, the demographic development and the inadequate attempts to reform so far are the main incentive for a new and potentially very large insurance market in CEE: The market for professional private health care insurance.
The classical private health care insurer, SIGNAL IDUNA, organises and finances medical services in CEE countries from one source. Our aim is to participate in the development of the growing health care market in these countries based on an integrated health care model and to become the market leader. We have laid the necessary infrastructure-related basis in Poland and Romania over the last two years by building up our own network of doctors and hospitals. Our clients can now be happy about what is being offered in case of sickness with regard to treatment within our network from specialists in almost every medical field and under comfortable in-patient conditions. Our health care insurance products for groups of as well as individual clients are sold by both our own outside sales force as well as by numerous sales partners and agents. We are now the leading insurance company for in- and out-patients' health care services in Poland; we are on a similar promising path in Romania.
Bearing local conditions in mind, we are going to implement our successful concept when planning our market entry into other Eastern European countries.
